The Basics You Need To Keep Tropical Fish

So you’ve decided to keep tropical fish! Welcome to this unique and fascinating hobby. But before we get ahead of ourselves, we need to realize that aquariums can be a lot of work. You have to keep the water in your aquarium clean and aerated, the fish have to have enough food, if you use live plants they will need light and nutrients, and you have to keep the algae under control.

It may take a lot of work sometimes, but this hobby is very rewarding as you’ll soon see.

Okay...enough talk, let’s get to the point:
If you’re just starting out, you need to know what you need to buy to get started. Here’s a list of the essentials that you need, no matter if you keep saltwater or freshwater fish:

An aquarium – To keep you fish in.

An aquarium stand – To support your new aquarium.

Filtration equipment – Filters can be chemical, mechanical and biological.

Lights – To help live plants grow, and to enhance the colors of your fish.

A tank hood – To reduce evaporation, and stop anything (such as a cat’s paw) from getting in.

Decorations – These can be anything you decide. There are a wide range of decorations available nowadays, so you can decorate your tank however you like. You’ll also want a background to hide the wires.

Substrate – This is basically the sand or gravel you use for the bottom of your aquarium.

Plants – There’s a wide range of plants you can choose for your aquarium nowadays, including live and plastic plants.

Heater – Tropical fish require a water temperature that is slightly higher than most people’s room temperature.

Chemicals – By chemicals, I mean chemical filtration, which gets rid of harmful gases that the water picks up as it passes through a carbon filter. It’s not always needed, but it is very easy to use and it’s better for your fish.

Thermometer – the plastic strip one with liquid crystals are best.

A net – For scooping things out of your aquarium.

Cleaning supplies (such as a scrubby on a stick, a small round brush
and a bucket reserved solely for aquarium use)

Fish food – to feed your fish, obviously.

And last, but not least… you’ll need the fish!

Rabbits Swallows

Rabbits are fast-moving, big-eared mammals. There are about 25 different species of Rabbits. They live in a variety of environments, including deserts, swamps, marshes, forests, grasslands, and prairies. Rabbits are found on every continent except Antarctica.

Rabbits are small mammals in the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha, found in several parts of the world. There are seven different genera in the family classified as Rabbits, including the European Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), Cottontail Rabbits (genus Sylvilagus; 13 species), and the Amami Rabbits (Pentalagus furnessi, endangered species on Amami Ōshima, Japan). There are many other species of Rabbits, and these, along with pikas and hares, make up the order Lagomorpha.

Most Rabbits live for about a year in the wild. They are hunted by dogs, foxes, raccoons, weasels, bobcats, lynxes, hawks, and eagles. They have a fast reproductive rate.

Anatomy: Rabbits range in size from 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm) long. They have very big and powerful hind legs which they use for hopping and for digging burrows.

Diet: Rabbits are herbivores (plant-eaters). They eat grass, leaves, bark, and twigs.

Classification: Kingdom Animalia (animals), Phylum Chordata (having a notochord), Class Mammalia (mammals), order Lagomorpha (Rabbits, hares, and pikas), Family Leporidae (Rabbits and hares), many Genera.

Rabbits are raised world-wide for a variety of reasons. In Europe and Asia they are an important source of food. Rabbits produce white meat that is fine-grained, high in protein, low in fat, highly palatable, low in cholesterol, and that can be substituted for poultry in most recipes. Rabbits carcasses are only 20 percent bone. In the United States Rabbits are raised predominantly for nonfood purposes. High quality Rabbits skins are used in fur garments and trimmings. Medical and cosmetic research also requires a large number of Rabbits each year. Many people raise Rabbits for show or as pets.

Raising Puppies: Be Positive

Bringing home the puppy home is one of the most enjoyable things that you can enjoy with the young puppy. After that, you are now thrusts into the role of a mother hen or an alpha male type of owner to raise the dog properly.

You would have to be very patient when raising a puppy. This will take a very long time and will sometimes be depressing. It will be depressing when you keep repeating things to the point that your dog does not seem to be responding. You would then be left wondering if this dog is deaf or is purposely doing this to piss me off.

Despite of all the challenges of training a puppy, you should always remember that in the end it will be for both your benefit. If you leave your puppy untrained, it will think that it’s the alpha male in your household and may make you do things you purposely hate.

Just think about the situation when it is the dog that’s becoming the boss. The dog will be pulling you out of the house just to walk the dog. Or the dog can bother you just to cook it a great home cooked dog food. Isn’t that worth thinking about? It will be much more depressing when that happens because you’ll be the laughing stock of people or even dogs.

Just like in anything else in life keeping a positive point of view helps. Even in training your puppy. When your puppy keeps on destroying stuff, humping guests or even mess up the garbage, scolding it in a negative matter won’t help. When you keep saying “No” to your puppy, the puppy will become confused. The puppy will not know what exactly it did wrong.

Instead the puppy should be trained in a positive manner. Make her do what you would want to do. When the puppy is nearing its call of nature, immediately bring the dog outside. After which bring the dog to your pesky neighbor’s lawn and tell the dog that it’s ok to crap there. Then give the dog a treat. This will make the dog learn that crapping outside is the good thing.

The main point is that when you see your pet doing well or would want them to do good bribe them with something good. I.e. when the dog is chewing its own chewing toy, you should reward it. When it is barking away at a pesky and irritating person, you should reward it too.

Remember keeping a positive attitude when training dogs counts. It is better to keep a positive attitude while training the dog earlier than having a negative attitude fro life because the dog has become your owner.

Pet Treat Goodies Go Gourmet

Like doting parents, we love to spoil our pets. My own menagerie of cats and dogs are coddled and cuddled in ways that amuses some friends, while others think of it as excess. The truth is, our furry friends love the attention and respond in kind. With good food, plenty of toys and regular veterinary care, our pets are happy, healthy and take up too much room in the bed.

Sleeping space aside, Americans love to pamper their pets. Toys, treats, clothing and other pet related merchandise accounts for roughly ten percent of the estimated 38 eight billion dollars we spend on our pets annually. The market for animal treats has been a growing steadily for the last several years and pet treats have gone from plain to the sublime. Gourmet pet treats are more popular than ever and this fact has not been lost on pet retailers.

A local business incubator helped launch a successful effort to market gourmet doggie treats. A quick check of the online marketplace can yield several outlets that specialize in gourmet gift baskets for your pet. Not unlike the usual fair found in gift baskets for humans, pet baskets are filled with yummy gourmet treats. Now the typical gift basket for pets will not be filled with Swiss chocolates and Jamaican coffee.

What it might have is a selection of toys and treats fit for the furry family member. The concept of giving our pets a collection of treats and toys is not new. As far back as my childhood, I can remember seeing mesh plastic Christmas stockings filled with pet goodies. Nothing from that era compares to the huge selection of doggie deserts and kitty confections available today.

By some reports, the market growth for gourmet pet foods and treats mirrors the market for gourmet people food. Changes in lifestyle habits and trends towards healthier diets have certainly driven many people towards more upscale foods. Many of us consider our pets to be members of the family and they share many aspects of our lives. Therefore, it makes sense that our furry friends would be part of a healthier lifestyle.

As humans, we have a great deal of discretion when it comes to making healthy dietary choices. Our pets rely on us to provide them with healthy food and that includes treats. With exception, my dogs love certain fruits and vegetables, including bananas, apples, peppers and even zucchini. Many pet owners have had similar experiences and this fact has not been lost on the pet treat industry.

There is an element of fun associated with the new trend in gourmet pet treats. Whether its bagels for your beagle or sweets for your Siamese, the industry has responded with creative packaging and marketing. The average dog or cat is not interested in the packing, but rather what is inside. This is not to say that an empty box is not a source of fun for your cat. The packaging certainly appeals to humans, often projecting an upscale image for the product.

Cats and dogs can now feast on ice cream, formulated for their digestive systems. Peanut butter petites, fruity biscuits and other gourmet treats are far from junk food. Successful producers understand the value of providing nutritious snacks that contribute the animals health and dietary needs. For example, chocolate should never be fed to your pet. Alternative ingredients such as carob are often used as a way to satisfy your pets sweet tooth.

Pets deserve the best from their owners and gourmet pet treats are a great way to show appreciation for the loyalty, love and companionship they provide.

Are There Benefits To Crating Your Dog?

Everyone needs a space of their own. You have your home office or den, your husband has the garage or workshop, your children have their bedrooms. But what about the dog? Even the family dog needs a space of his own from time to time. This is the true function of the dog crate. Many dog owners refuse to use them because of the negative connotations that come with it. But, if used properly, a dog crate or a small dog cage, can serve as a place of solitude for your dog.

In order for the crate to be a positive experience for your dog, begin the process of crate training on a day or night when you have time to stay at home and observe your dog's behavior. During the day, for instance, put your dog inside the crate for short periods say, 15-minute intervals. A successful crating session has happened if your dog seems comfortable. If your dog whines or tries to get your attention, ignore her, but take note. If it's simply a cry for attention, she will soon learn that crate time is personal time, and will begin to occupy herself or rest. If the whining worsens, or does not go away over a few days of consistent crating sessions, there may be a deeper issue there, and you should consult an expert.

To reinforce the idea that the crate should be a positive experience, crate your dog several times during the day and increase each session by five minutes. After each session resume your dog's normal routine, taking play breaks and walks outside. By the end of the day, you should be up to a full 30 minutes of crate time.

That evening, put her to bed in the crate after she's had her nightly bathroom break, of course. Chances are, she will fall right to sleep.

If she spends her 15-minute interval whining, simply continue crating her throughout the day in 15-minute intervals until she begins to feel comfortable enough to stop trying to get your attention. By bedtime, she should be comfortable enough to spend a night in the crate. If she whimpers at this point, don't worry - especially if she is very young. A young puppy will still be suffering from separation anxiety and missing her mother. Successful crate training will provide comfort and stability during this difficult transition period.

The crate can also be an invaluable tool when it comes to housebreaking your dog. It is a rare dog that will go to the bathroom when confined to a small space. Like humans, they find the idea of soiling themselves pretty disgusting and will avoid doing so if at all possible. For that reason, if you are crate-training and potty-training at the same time, take your dog outside to use the bathroom after each crate session. Give her five or 10 minutes to do her business and praise her lavishly when she does.

If you are using the crate specifically to potty train, you may want to recrate her after a nonproductive bathroom break. Once she goes in the yard, however, praise her lavishly and release her to play.

Many people who use crates for their dogs leave the crate door open when the dog is not inside, in order to give the pooch access to it. Remember, the crate is a good thing. It is your dog's room. The fact that your dog chooses to spend time there on her own is a good sign. This will become a place of security and will provide peace of mind for both you and your dog.

Are Dog Beds a Luxury or an Essential?

You bring your cute, fun loving puppy home for the first time and of course you want your canine to sleep with you. All furry warm and snuggly. But that is not the best thing to do for you or your dog. You really need a canine bed and establish the correct behavior at the outset. Sure it's fine now but when your dog grows to it's full size at 100 lb, will it be such fun?

Dog beds today come in all sizes, colors, shapes, materials to suit any canine and any decor. If that's not enough you can even have dog beds custom made. If you adopted your dog from the pound he may actually prefer his own place.

Things to Consider When Buying a Dog Bed.

Does your pooch shed or have any other disorder that will cause the bed to need constant cleaning? Does he hang his head over the edge? Does your dog curl up in a ball? The answer to any of these questions will help determine the type of dog bed needed for your pet.

Some Of The Benefits of Dog Beds

A dog bed allows your pet to have his own space, a place where he can curl up, relax and sleep. Beds with sides are great for dogs that like to hang their head over the edge.

Cushions and support should be considered for older dogs, as well as pooches with other joint or bone problems. Orthopedic foam tends to provide additional warmth too so if you live in a warmer climate, your hound may prefer a cooling bed like the Canine Cooler to the traditional orthopedic bed.

Some Dog Bed Features

You'll find out that this is something your canine will be using every single day for the next five to ten years so you ought to put some thought into the dog bed selection. You should consider the size of your room and size needed for comfort the of your pet.

Quality beds such as the Memory Foam Bed or the Thera Ortho Mattress are designed to relieve sore joints, bones and other problems that may arise due to your pets age or weight. More traditional-style cushioned outdoor beds are made of tough polyester and resist mildew and fungus.

Other Dog Bed Considerations

Be sure to measure the entire length of your canine at rest to get an idea of how much space he is using so you can select the correct size. The most efficient way to make sure you are ordering the correct size bed is by measuring your hound in his favorite laying position and adding five inches. Watch your dog sleep. Does he usually curl up or stretch out? If he's relaxed to his maximum size, make sure the bed is big enough to support his entire body.

If you have a little hound a small round pillow-type bed may be the best. It will let your pet burrow and nest. They come in a variety of styles, materials and colors and most can be thrown straight into the washing machine.

Next on the list of requirements is probably a chew proof bed, especially for puppies! There are any amount of styles of dog bed, such as indoor or outdoor, heated or not, travel or car beds and as previously mentioned orthopedic beds for the older canine. Most are stuffed with polyfill, often have cedar chips to repel odors and their covers are removable and machine washable.

For older dogs you need to consider the ideal dog bed. What about Grandma climbing into a waterbed with a two-foot frame? Or better yet, imagine her trying to get out. If your older pooch currently sleeps on the floor or in a cardboard box with blankets, his discomfort would be similar to these scenarios. An orthopedic dog bed would be ideal in this case.

Your dog will enjoy a high quality dog bed for all the same reasons that we enjoy our beds so make sure you buy a good quality bed that fits your pet and suits the way he likes to sleep.

The Oldest Breed of Domestic Cat, the Siamese

Probably the oldest breed of cat in existence is the unique-looking Siamese. This sleek feline was originally exported from Siam, now Thailand, in the late eighteen hundreds and the unmistakable appearance is known far and wide. Siamese cats are all sleek lines, chiseled aristocratic, wedge-shaped heads, short silky coats, almond shaped eyes that are a deep blue and are slanted, and their coats which consist of a striking contrast in color. Another thing that is legendary about Siamese cats is their voice, as they are quite vocal, and are also well known for speaking with their body language as much as their voices. Very much a "people" cat, they are happiest whether in your bed, on your lap, or anywhere else they can get to, including the kitchen table. They love to explore, so do not be surprised if you find your Siamese on top your refrigerator, walking the narrow edge of your bedroom door, and happily ensconced inside of your kitchen cupboard, bathroom vanity, or even nestled on a shelf inside your linen closet.Highly intelligent, Siamese cats have loving natures and inquisitive personalities making their journey to your heart a quick and easy one. These beautiful animals first appeared in England when the English ambassador to Siam was presented with them as a gift, and he returned home with them. It didn't take long before they began to appear in the English cat shows and by the early twentieth century, they also began to show up in the American shows as well.Probably the best-known variety of Siamese cat is the Seal point, with pale fawn bodies and seal brown extremities that are almost black in color. The Seal points were the first of the breed to arrive on the Western scene. Chocolate points having creamy white bodies and milk chocolate markings did appear from time to time. But the Blue point with bluish-white bodies and slate blue points was the one that really gained official recognition around 1934. In case you didn't know, the points are located on the cat's legs, tail, mask, and ears. Last but certainly not least is the Lilac point, which has a white body and pinkish gray points, and is considered to be the most ethereal and delicate Siamese in hue, with color considered the most prominent feature in this breed of cat.Siamese cats are loving, personable animals that will easily win their way into your heart and captivate you with their distinctive good looks, superb intelligence, and winning personalities. And if you enjoy talking to your cat, and what cat lover does not, your Siamese will happily keep up his end of the conversation.

The Importance of Proper Dog Training

Dog behavior training is very important in preventing aggression and teaching dogs to interact properly with their handlers, other members of the family and other pets. You need to understand how to train your dog properly so that it will be the devoted, loyal and loving companion that you desire. The original dogs were probably orphaned wolf pups that were adopted by human centuries ago. These wild dogs learnt to perform behaviors that their human handlers taught, such as guarding the cave or scaring predators. In exchange, human probably provided them with food, shelter and protection. This relationship still exists and of course, dogs can still perform valuable jobs, including herding, guarding property, people and livestock, and others for their human handlers. The hierarchyIt is important to know that dogs are pack animals. In the wild, packs are formed and there is a hierarchy in this "society". The hierarchy or structure remains unchanged, unless there is death or injury to the alpha dog. The alpha dog is the leader and the pack does not challenge its leader.Hence, to train your dog properly, you need to become the alpha dog. Only then will your dog respect you and will follow your commands without question. This respect forms the basis of all subsequent training. In today's lifestyle, there are many advantages from training your dog into a well-mannered and obedient dog. For starters, the puppy or dog will be fun to be with. In addition, a well-mannered dog puts everyone's mind at ease, especially dogs with negative image such as the Doberman, Rottweiler and Pit Bull.Puppy and dogs have inherent bad behaviors and it is also important for you to understand the factors behind these unwanted behaviors. For example, chewing and destroying furniture may be a sign of separation anxiety. Once you know the root of the problem, you are already taking the first step to eliminating dog behavior problems.Understanding dog behaviorSome dogs exhibit unwanted behaviors because of stress and its inability to copy with that stress. A good dog training program will teach the dog to tolerate greater levels of stress without becoming a problem animal. It is easy to confuse human behavior with dog behavior. Although some dog owners may see their dogs as almost human, it is important to understand that dogs and humans have very different motivations and reactions to similar situations. However, humans and dogs do have a common trait... and that is the need to form close social bonds and groups. Bonding is an important element to both humans and dogs. As the adage goes, "No man's an island". The saying probably applies to dogs as well!
